Julius Shulman, Visual Acoustics

This weekend we watched a beautiful documentary on Julius Shulman. What can I say except that I love this man and am so very greatful to him for capturing the essence of midcentury modern architecture.
"Visual Acoustics celebrates the life and career of Julius Shulman, the world's greatest architectural photographer, whose images brought modern architecture to the American mainstream. Shulman, who passed away this year, captured the work of nearly every modern and progressive architect since the 1930s including Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, John Lautner and Frank Gehry. His images epitomized the singular beauty of Southern California's modernist movement and brought its iconic structures to the attention of the general public. This unique film is both a testament to the evolution of modern architecture and a joyful portrait of the magnetic, whip-smart gentleman who chronicled it with his unforgettable images." 2. great trailer-I've never seen a 'glass house'in real life. AND I really love the top photo with the funky tree; we have a sad, awkward, funky tree that grows like that. Perhaps if I let the kids build their tree house around it, it won't look so sad anymore.

I can certainly see why he is called the world's greatest architectural photographer!

  4. Are you looking at his construction for ideas for your new house? Very interesting. No cookie cutters there!

  5. I'm so envious! I've been wanting to see this, but I wasn't able to make it to Atlanta (2 hr drive) the one night that it played there. The limited release was so frustrating. Very happy to hear the DVD has been released. Addint to my Netflix queue right now :)
