Gravel Art
How many of you out there remember the Gravel Art of the 50's and 60's? You could buy a kit and create these lovely pieces of art to hang on those wood panelled walls in the entryway or den. Many considered them crass. I consider them class. I'd like to have a matched pair hanging in my entry. Check out Suzanna Anna for a video of how she still creates these pieces. Sorry I can't tell you which ones are her creations or which ones are vintage. Thank you Gretchen for the link.
You know, I passed up one of these beauties at Habitat for Humanity about 2 weeks ago due to some major gravel loss, but now I'm thinking I could have fixed it. Of course you know it won't be there any longer. If I could get my paws on those cats you have pictured, I would be one happy lady.
ReplyDeleteI want them all!! I was at an "antique" mall yesterday and you wouldn't BELIEVE how much they wanted for them - needless to say, this thrifter said nope. California is expensive to thrift in!
ReplyDeleteIf you find those anywhere, let me know - I love them!!
Oooh, those are fun! I especially like the guitar-lute pair at the end.
ReplyDeleteOh and it's always nice to see another lefty (the lute player in the penultimate picture is a southpaw)!
Where do you purchase colored gravel these days to make them yourself?
ReplyDeleteRemember them? We still have the ones my mother-in-law made! I think they are very cool- and I didn't like them when I first met my husband. They totally grew on me over the years. My favorites that you showed us are those cats - love those crazy cool cats!
ReplyDeleteWow Heidi, I'd love to see the ones you have. Your house has the coolest stuff of any place I've ever been. PVSS, I am not sure if anyone sells these kits. I saw a website Suzanna-Anna.com but nothing is available any longer. Don't know why but she had some really cool kits at one time. I'll have to do some research.I love the idea of making your own makeup PVSS.
ReplyDeleteI totally love them and they remind me of my dad who used to make them - wish I had the ones he made in the 60's
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog and its fab!
Love these! I originally saw this artist on HGTV -- she talks about her technique. Very cool! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Om_LVIWPeWI
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link Gretchen. Thanks CS for checking out my blog.
ReplyDeleteGravel Art! Love those kitties!!! The guitars would look awesome in my office!
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother made some like these. She did birds and flowers and one HUGE spanish Galleon in full sail. Awsome post!
ReplyDeleteOMG! I was born in 1956 and I remember some of these in homes in outr neighborhood!!! I love them, and had certainly forgotten them until I saw this post! I would love to try and make one! I am going straight over to check out Suzanna Anna!!!
ReplyDeleteI make my own gravel art and love every minute of it. My BFF tells me I should sell them but I can't bring myself to let them go. Been making them for a couple of years now AND collecting them for about 10 years. To get the materials to make your own gravel art is quite expensive and time consuming but it is worth it!
