I don't know anything about them - but it sounds like a good idea to me. I can't read about olive trees without thinking of the Christmas song I learned when I was little. Do you know it?
We have two of them: a Manzanillo and another one (I can't remember the name) that has huge fruit on it. They were made for our climate here in the foothills. Very easy to grow and don't need a lot of water or care. It's a beautiful tree, as we can see from your photos and Van Gogh paintings. Just don't plant one on a patio. They are kind of messy during parts of the year.... that would be the part when you want to be sitting on the patio, BBQ-ing and having parties. But I've heard that there's one that has very little fruit and some varieties are better for landscaping. Ask at your local nursery but by all means buy one.... or 10 if you're going to process olives or make oil. Everyone that has an ounce of Italian in them is required, by California law, to have an olive tree. Well, not really... but it's a good idea.
Our next door neighbor had olive trees in their yard when I was little, and I remember picking them and being fascinated with them!

I looove olive trees, but unfortunately we don't have the climate for them here in Ireland :)
ReplyDeleteOlive trees are gorgeous, I love the way they look.
ReplyDeleteYou California folks and the great stuff you can grow! Olives AND avocados? Beautiful pictures!
