Still have all my fingers left..

(note the ugly chandelier)

I hit the thrift stores on Friday with my friend Heidi Ann. (Gold Country Gal) We went to a new place in town that both of us had been curious about. I found a few things; two great couch pillows and a couple of lamps. Just what I need...more lamps. One of the lamps had a fabulous shade. (you'll see in a minute. Don't peek!) The shade was paired with a beautiful silver stacked bubble lamp that was from a completely different era. (I'll post about the lamp later) I paid $45.00 for both. Too much, I know. I'm used to under $5.00 finds. The following morning at about 4 a.m. whilst I lay their fighting my buyers remorse, an idea popped into my sleepy head. I spent the next hour and a half figuring just how I could dismantle the ugly light fixture that hangs over our dining room table without actually removing the entire thing from the ceiling. Only then was I able to go back to sleep. My husband was gathering up our tax stuff today so I didn't dare ask him to help. I'd rather fry a couple of fingers and shock myself across the room than do tax related work, thank you very much. So, here is what I did. First I turned the power off. I then removed just the light fixture leaving the wire and chain still attached to ceiling. I had to thread the wire through an extender then through the top of shade. (see below)

I tied a knot in the wire and stood back to see how it looked before I attached the socket/fixture (whatever it's called) to the wire. Nice, very nice. I wired it up and ... it didn't work. (see below) Guess I had a bum socket. After a trip to Andy's True Value for a new socket and some advice from the nice gentleman behind the counter I headed back to try it again. I'm nervous by this point. What if I messed up the wiring?

This time it worked. Yippeeeee!! Happy dance! Don't you just love this cool fiberglass, YES FIBERGLASS, shade?

Doesn't it look gorgeous at night? And we all know that a red hue is very flattering . The kids won't be home tonight. Guess who is going to have a romantic dinner with the taxman? Yep, that's right, Electricity Girl!

  3. So beautiful! I love that fixture in your house--it is really perfect for the space. Good for you for hooking it up! Yay!

I'm obsessed with light fixtures, too. The right one makes a huge difference in the entire living space, so I understand your thinking about this a lot.

  9. I appreciate all of your wonderful comments. It is so nice to have such positive feedback. For an experienced person this job would have been a slam dunk but it took me the better part of the afternoon, so thank you for taking the time to drop me a line. Stay tuned. I'll be rewiring a very cool little cork lamp next post.

  15. Wow, I love that shade in red. I have the same shade in green (0n the original lamp which matches the shade) My husband hates it but as soon as i laid eyes on it I had to have it! Currently the lamp has a place of honor in my living room, but if i ever get tired of it as a lamp now thanks to you I can see it as a future chandelier too!
Great job with the wiring all by yourself!
