And Still More Fun Finds.....

In case you don't already know this about me, a few years ago we bought a very cool 70's home with lots of bedrooms. Since it is too much house for us (and we couldn't afford to live in it anyway) we rent the entire house out, along with two smaller cottages, to 10 senior citizens. My sons and I cook 3 meals a day for them and then we go home. It's a win win situation. You'll never find more responsible and respectful renters. Of course I don't know what goes on after we leave. It's anybody's guess! It is also home for many of the items I find in the thrift stores.

These chairs are not recent finds, I've had them a few months but I don't think I ever included them in a post and they are too cute to leave out. (click on images for detail)

Recently, I ran across this low and stylish sofa at Salvation Army. It's perfect for the family room. It seats lots of people on movie nights. It came with two side chairs, one of them pictured below. The other one jumped out of the trailer on the way home. I saved the legs but the body was pretty badly torn up. Sad, very sad.

I found these lovely asian inspired oil paintings for $15.00 today and knew they would be right at home over the new sofa.

The teak end table was purchased the same day as the sectional. I forgot to mention, it was half off day. Both chairs, teak end table and the sectional for around $80.00.

Found this little ice bucket today and it fit right in with the rest of the new goodies.

I was very excited when I found this set of Henckel knives for $15.00. These are a big deal when you cook for a living. They retail for around $225.00! I was a very happy cook today.

Last but certainly not least is this cool chair I found for my desk in the kitchen. I love it. I would love to have found 4 of them, but one is good. It was a good week.

  2. I'm so impressed with what you did in this huge home. Did you have to get some kind of license or permit to do this? Don't these seniors require any medical care or help in the home?
You've made such a nice place out of this house with your amazing thriftiness and I'm sure that your residents are very happy there.
My Mother-in-law has a silk print over her sofa just like the one you bought. Those three piece pictures were very popular in the 60's.
    Great post!

  3. Thank you. No, no permit is required as long as you provide no care other than cooking and cleaning. It is considered a rental and they are paying me to come in and cook for them in "their" home. They look out for each other at night.

  4. Oh, I totally know where I'm spending my golden years :)

Wow, that's some great furniture! I saw a similar sofa (with rattan on the sides) on the curb last week, after a rainfall. I stood there & stared at it for quite a while, totally depressed :(

Can't believe you found those knives for that price-WOW!

  6. Wow, I'm with Leah, I want to retire at your house!

    Wonderful, wonderful.

And bravo for providing a lovely place for our older folks to enjoy.

  7. It's always sad when furniture chooses suicide by jumping from the back of the truck. I've experienced a few of these deaths. Very sad! Love the kitchen chair! A little advice, check the bottom of the legs and make sure the stoppers are in. Otherwise, they will punch holes in your linoleum every time you sit down. More experience! If they aren't there, take a trip to Home Depot. They should be able to hook you up!

    Loved this post!

  8. Thanks Anna. Punctures in the vinyl would be sadder than chair suicide for sure!

  10. I love your Senior Community. Its so sweet that you cook for them too! We can all only hope to be as well cared for ourselves at that age! It reminds me of the Beatles song, Will you still feed me, will you still need me when I'm 64? LOL!
