WHAT HAPPENED TO THANKSGIVING DAY PARADES AND MOVIE CLASSICS?

My fondest memory, and an integral part of our Thanksgiving Day tradition, was waking early to view the the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on television. We usually had breakfast while watching the fabulous floats and multi-story high balloons of our favorite cartoon characters.

Later in the day we would watch The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The scene where Tom and Becky Tatcher get lost in the cave always had me sitting at the edge of my chair. I felt so sorry for Tom...he didn't mean to cause trouble, trouble just always seemed to come his way. I loved the end though when Aunt Polly was so happy to see Tom.

Another favorite holiday movie was
Babes in Toyland. The 1936 version starring Laurel and Hardy, also called March of the Wooden Soldiers, is my favorite version. I have to admit though, it scared the heck out of me when I was really young. I was jumping for joy however when the wooden soldiers came marching in to save the day. (You can view it on youtube, I wasn't able to post it here.) The 1961 version starred Annette Funicello, Tommy Sands and my all time favorite Disney actor Ed Wynn. How can you not love Ed Wynn?

I couldn't find any of my favorites on television this Thanksgiving Day. The only parade coverage I found was on one of the morning shows and they were flipping back and forth between the show and a couple of different parades. It was very disappointing. On Christmas day I plan to rent my favorite movies and watch them, in between cooking the turkey and all the fixings. I can't wait!

  1. I wonder if they think kids just aren't interested in watching these parades on TV. What about us old fogies???? The 1961 version of "Babes in Toyland" was always a favorite of mine, too! I suppose the only way to watch the oldies but goodies is via DVD, but hopefully people will be introducing their kids to these classics.

  2. I'm going to check out Netflix and see if any of my favorites are there. I may not even wait until Christmas.
