Oh good lord! Did I have some adventures there! Oh wait, I think that should be "did I have some adventures there?" I remember the hotel and the lounge but, strangely, what I did in there escapes me. Ah, the 70's . . .
I was hoping you could tell me a little about the place. Were the rooms fabulous? Was the lounge terrific...think, girl, think! Was Buddy there in the 60's? Maybe he'd remember....Maybe you have some pictures.
When did this place close? Seems like I might have had a drink there in the early 80's but maybe it was someplace else. Fabulous, swanky looking hotel!
Look at those rooms! See the one with the man looking out? I love it! What a fabulous building ... if it were still there I'd arrange to meet you at the cocktail lounge! And then I'd fly home ... no I wouldn't, I'd make you drive me to your house!
We lived in Lafayette until 1968. Dad worked in Union City (talk about a commute!) but he'd entertain clients staying in SF and one of his favorite drinking holes was The Iron Horse on Maiden Lane. Dad was highly impressed with the piano player/songstress there by the name of Jeannie who apparently had some bodacious ta-tas! His clients usually stayed at hotels like the Stanford Court though, although he may have hit the Villa Roma's lounge. I'll show him the photo next time I see him and he may remember. HOWEVER--I also mentioned the Villa Roma to my girlfriend who was born and raised in North Beach and who MAY have partied with me at the VR but unfortunately her memory is as bad as mine, or worse--she doesn't remember the place AT ALL!

ReplyDeleteIt's so sad to think how much great mid-century architecture has been demolished to make way for parking lots and nondescript glass high rises.
ReplyDeleteDevastating it's not still there!
