The house that we are
planning will have two bedrooms.
We vacillated back and forth on the number of
bedrooms and have decided we only need two.
The second bedroom will be a multi-use room
so we have been talking about building a Murphy Bed.

Coincidentally, yesterday at the hardware store
a clerk, out of the blue, told us about the original
Murphy Bed she had. Evidently they were mass produced
in response to the 1907 San Francisco earthquake.
When I researched the Murphy Bed Company
I found out the gentleman who started it all
was born in Columbia, about 5 minutes
from where we live.
Isn't that cool?
Here are a few very cool Murphy Beds
that I found on Apartment Therapy.
I like the way this one folds down
over a small couch.

I wonder if they take the
stuff off the shelf everytime
or if it's glued on?

I like the clean lines
on this one.

This looks like it's freestanding.
Nice.

Did I mention she is selling her bed?
I think we may need to check it out.

I love the design and such, but yes, my advice is do NOT plan on using it all the time!
ReplyDeleteI used a standard sofa bed when I moved into my Studio, with the intention of closing it up every day. It didn't take long to realize it was far too much trouble to fold up the bedding every day, fold up the bed and move the coffee table, only to have to do it all over again every evening.
For an occasional guest room? Perfect!
I would love to have a Murphy bed! Great modern examples here. My brother-in-law built one with flanking cabinets, and it's really quite comfortable. It enables them to to have a combo guest room/music studio. I do think that I would tire of putting it up each day if it were my main bed, but for a guest room it's the perfect solution! And how cool that the man who invented it is from your area :)
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted a Murphy Bed for a guest room. Good question about the stuff on the shelves though. It really would be a pain to have to remove everything when you needed to use the bed. Maybe you could just attach a large piece of art to the back or have a cool slat design between two banks of real shelves (kinda like the Brick House porch design).
ReplyDeleteWhere will the boys go? Or do they sleep in the Murphy Bed and you fold them up with it?
ReplyDeleteMurphy Beds are definitely not an Australiabn design element ... I can only really picture them in slap-stick movies.
Having said that, I'd be happy to sleep in yours when I come to visit!
I never used to think of a Murphy bed until I started working for a company that made them. I think they are absolutely perfect for almost any space, whether it be small or large.
ReplyDeleteMy parents finally broke down and bought one (mainly because I complained so much about sleeping on the aero bed and it being uncomfortable and cold).

Awesome! murphy wall beds have certainly come a long way! I am hoping to purchase one soon. Whenever my parents come into town I let them sleep in my room. I don't have any spare bedrooms, so I just sleep on the couch. It would be nice to have an actual bed for when they visit.
ReplyDeleteheh i have a mushy bed in my guest room, and it is fantastic. I have considered putting them in all the bedroos as they are so cool and it is easier to close bed than to make it.
ReplyDeletethey could be your main bed as they are not like sofa beds, all you do is close them, pillows comforters and all,
don't have to even make the bed. it takes about 30 seconds to close it with your finger. they can accommodate all types of mattresses etc.
they are not the cheapest, and you really need to use a company that does them regularly as they need to be fitted to the weight of your bed etc for them to really work best.
I am interested in the ones that have a couch and then a bed drops down over it.
that would be really useful for me in the tv room as i hate using sofa beds.
